Fall 2021
Hello Friends and Family!
Have you ever noticed that I start most of my correspondence with that greeting? It’s an accidental on purpose kind of thing.
Family is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as “a group of one or more parents and their children living together as a unit” or “all the descendants of a common ancestor.” The majority of us think first of those in our core “unit” family – mom, dad, husband, wife, daughter, son. Then we start expanding to include Grandparents, Aunt, Cousins, and the list can go on. It’s generally understood that “family” is people you are related to.
This summer has given me time to reflect upon that word - family. I have spent most of the summer either teaching a camp or sitting in a hospital room with a parent. As I write now, I’m waiting for my Dad to come out of surgery. In all the chaos of this season, family has become a word that means so much more than just relatives. Our related family has been there constantly through text, phone calls and their presence. Our church families have showered us with meals to make life easier and prayers to keep us grounded. Our school family has given countless rides and sleepovers to our daughter. Our friends and neighborhood family have simply loved and talked us through it all.
We have a BIG family.
At Make Creative Studio, we are making family. We gather together, celebrate the good, the bad and the ugly. We cry over failures and successes. We laugh at the days to come. We are present. Making simple art together soothes the soul, gives everyone a level playing field and opens doors. God is in the mix, helping us to create not relatives, but relationships.
I ran into a family member at the gas station the other day. It had been over a year since I had seen her at an Art and Recovery class in the studio. In a flash with a smile on her face, she tells me she has been clean for a year and is living on her own. I was so happy for her. To this only child, she is a sister in Christ and a new family member.
Make exists to serve others, build relationships and share those incredible and scary God moments with an ever growing and changing family dynamic. We use our summer camps and classes, as well as private donations to provide funding for programs like Art and Recovery. The fall holds a new Art Therapist, a new school to service and new supply needs. If you are feeling led, please consider giving a gift that will help us continue to bless our growing family.
Blessings in Christ,
Angie
